Family Counseling

Is your family going through a rough patch? Whether the issue itself, stems from a lack of understanding between those involved, sibling conflict, or developmental disagreements with a child, a difficult situation can have an effect on the entire family. Family counseling, or family therapy, can be helpful when problems arise and can help restore and improve communication.

These are a few situations where family therapy may be beneficial:

  • If a family has experienced a loss, trauma, a life transition or crisis.
  • If a family member is suffering from a mental health/substance abuse issue or other challenges that can impact the family.
  • Conflict/Issues between parents.
  • If there are barriers to communication/conflict resolution.
  • If there has been a disconnect or lack of connection within the family

How can Family Therapy help?

Family Therapy can provide a neutral, safe place for family members to begin to open up a line of dialogue and communication that fosters an understanding and respect for one another's perspectives but also to begin the process of healing from past family conflict that may be left unresolved.  Additionally, developing more effective ways of communicating by learning to manage individual and family triggers/stressors allow for the family system to improve not only communication and conflict resolution but to improve the overall connection, love and support within the family.

What is the Process of Family Therapy?

Best practices for Family Therapy involve meeting with the Parent(s) and/or "Identified Client" for initial sessions to assess family history, presenting problems, etc., before bringing the family in for sessions.  Guidelines for sessions are reviewed with all family members to ensure an environment that is conducive for each family member to be heard and respected so that healing, growth and healthy communication is reached.

Just as in individual therapy, time frame for family therapy will vary according to each family history, situation and presenting concerns.  Healing, growth and change is possible.  The most important part is the family's desire and commitment for healing, growth and change.
